HYTORC Backup Washer Technology

The HYTORC Z Washers adopt the same locking principle as the HYTORC reaction washers. They replace conventional flat washers and here both sides are ribbed to grip the assembly and also to retain the nut or screw head if necessary. The operator just has to deal with the side of his clamping and the other side of the assembly is blocked by the backup washer. This HYTORC tightening accessory replaces the use of the usual wrenches when a nut starts to turn during tightening. HYTORC Z Washers are available in sizes from M14 to M80.

Productivity gains with HYTORC Backup Washers

HYTORC backup washers save a lot of time because many bolted assembly operations include the use of a counter key in their procedure. This usually requires an additional operator for the installation and removal of the counter key. If he is using a hydraulic wrench, he only needs to manipulate it to remove it easily, but if he is using a mechanical wrench, he needs a flat wrench to operate the pressure screw that has taken the effort in order to release the tool. This requires time between tightening each bolt and is a significant loss of time for thetightening operation because the tightening operator and the counter wrench operator must be well coordinated to chain their successive tasks. Once the HYTORC Z Washers are in place, there is no need to worry about them. For many tightening operations there is no real counter wrench available to the operator but only impact wrenches. After tightening the bolt, the wrench that prevented the nut from turning must be removed by force systematically using a sledgehammer. The risk of injury to the operator is high because the wrench can be thrown at him or fall on his legs, not to mention the sledgehammer, which is used in positions that are not always obvious. When working at height, there is also the risk of throwing a tool outside the work platform, which can be dangerous for the surrounding operators.
